Installing an ARC, Inc. shower former system is an easy process, requiring common tools and skills. It is, however, critical to the long-term success of every project that the job is done thoroughly with special attention paid to supporting the former’s edges and making sure the former is level.

ARC shower formers may be installed directly onto a 16” o.c. joist system, onto a wood sub-floor, recessed into concrete, or on top of concrete. The following step-by-step procedure covers typical installation scenarios, though with a little adaptation of these instructions you’ll be able to handle other circumstances, too. The accompanying photos were taken of a bathroom remodeling project, where the crew decided to leave the wood sub-floor and build up around the former with Fibrerock, a USG brand gypsum tile underlayment product. Fiberboard, like Hardiboard, is another preferred product for this purpose, as are Durock and Permabase.

ARC carries two Wet Room Tanking Kits. The Essential Kit (ARC111) provides the unique items you’ll need for waterproofing a shower and bathroom. The Ultimate Kit (ARC112) goes a giant step further by adding all the odds and ends you need to get the project done, so you can focus on your installation and not waste time or money running to the building supply for items you don’t have have on hand.

Before getting to the shower former installation, there are a few tips to share regarding the preparation of the general shower area. If stud walls are exposed I recommend you take a few preliminary measures that may help your customer in the future and help you get a call back or referral. It’s less costly to make accommodations now than to tear out a finished wall months or years later, after all the sheathing and tile have been completed. Attending to details that support your customer’s ongoing needs will also go a long way toward retaining their business over time.
